Flathead Lake Facts

• Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake in the western United States.

• The lake is one of the 300 largest natural lakes in the world.

• Wildhorse Island is the lake's largest island.  The island is noted for its head of Rocky Mountain Bighorn sheep and a number of wild horses.

• Native fish species found in the lake include redside shiner, peamouth minnow, squawfish minnow, sculpin, bull trout, cutthroat trout, pygmy whitefish and mountain whitefish.

• The major tributaries for Flathead Lake are the Flathead and Swan Rivers. 

• The lake covers 191.5 square miles and at its maximum is 370.7 feet deep.
